Self Tapping Screws

Efficiency on the job site relies on hardware that works as hard as you do. At Electro South West Ltd, our comprehensive range of self-tapping screws is engineered to cut its own precise thread as it is driven into the material. This eliminates the time-consuming process of pre-tapping, significantly accelerating your workflow while ensuring a tightly tailored, high-friction fit.

Whether you are assembling HVAC ductwork, securing metal cladding, or fastening heavy-duty plastics and fibreglass, our collection provides the ultimate grip. We stock a wide variety of head profiles including pan head, countersunk, and hex in both standard zinc-plated steel for indoor construction and premium A2/A4 stainless steel for superior weather and corrosion resistance. To ensure a flawless installation without cam-outs or stripped heads, we highly recommend pairing these fasteners with impact-rated driver bits from our [Power Tool Accessories] range. For exterior applications requiring a watertight seal, browse our professional [Sealants & Adhesives]. Engineered for high-torque driving, our self-tappers deliver a permanent hold you can trust.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are self‑tapping screws used for?

Self‑tapping screws are designed to cut their own thread as they’re driven, making them ideal for fastening into metal, plastics and thin materials without pre‑tapping.

Do I need to drill a pilot hole for self-tapping screws?

While self-tapping screws are designed to cut their own thread, you generally still need to drill a pre-sized pilot hole in harder materials (like sheet metal) to guide the screw and prevent the material from warping or the screw from snapping. The exception is "self-drilling" screws (often called Tek screws), which feature a built-in drill-bit point to drill and tap in one fluid motion.

Should I choose zinc-plated or stainless steel self-tappers?

Zinc-plated screws are exceptionally durable and cost-effective for indoor, dry environments. However, if your project is outdoors, exposed to the elements, or situated in a corrosive coastal or industrial environment, stainless steel (A2 or A4 grade) is absolutely essential to prevent rust and maintain long-term structural integrity.
