Frequently Asked Questions
Why can't I use standard zinc wood screws for my outdoor decking?
Why can't I use standard zinc wood screws for my outdoor decking?
Standard zinc-plated wood screws are designed for internal use. If used outdoors, they will quickly rust, bleed dark stains down your timber, and eventually snap under the constant expansion and contraction of the wet wood. Decking screws are specifically manufactured with advanced anti-corrosion coatings or solid stainless steel to survive decades of harsh weather and the corrosive chemicals often found in pressure-treated timber.
Do I need to pre-drill the holes for modern timber screws?
Do I need to pre-drill the holes for modern timber screws?
In most softwoods, no. Our premium timber and decking screws feature advanced self-drilling tips (often called slash points) and specially fluted threads that clear the debris as they drive in, preventing the wood from splitting. However, if you are working with very dense hardwoods (like Oak or Balau) or driving a screw very close to the edge of a board, we still highly recommend pre-drilling a small pilot hole to guarantee a flawless finish.
What is the advantage of a Torx (star) head over a standard cross-head (Pozi) screw?
What is the advantage of a Torx (star) head over a standard cross-head (Pozi) screw?
A Torx (TX) drive features a six-point star-shaped recess. This design provides maximum surface contact between the screw and your driver bit, which virtually eliminates "cam-out" (the frustrating moment the drill bit slips and strips the screw head). This allows you to apply much higher torque, making Torx screws the absolute best choice when driving long, heavy-duty structural screws deep into dense timber.
